Economy Program Day

The 2017 LGSC participants continued their leadership journey this time meeting at the Blackwood Centre in Koroit. The Program challenge day this time was economics with the participants testing their knowledge on economies and what impacts both good and bad an economy can have, in particular the Great South Coast.

Sarah Brebner (Manager of Regional Economic Policy, Regional Development Victoria) presented an overview of Globalisation, Urbanisation and local statistics on the labour force in the GSC and where growth and decline areas are in relation to local industry. The group discovered an interesting point that regions like Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong are the fast growing Regional centres as Melbourne “races” towards being the nation’s biggest city. What does this mean for the GSC? Do we need to lobby for better infrastructure to make us more accessible to urbanisation (Melbourne).

The group then travelled to Murray Goulburn to meet Gerard Lourey (General Manager) and Chris Evans (Site Manager) where an insight into MG concerns was explained to the participants and an overall view of where MG is heading and some ‘mind blowing’ stats of the scale of production and employment within MG. A tour of the Koroit MG factory was very interesting as the group witnessed firsthand the production plant in full operation.

The day concluded with a “round table” discussion with Dr Greg Woods as he spoke with optimism about the growth of Agriculture and Manufacturing within our region. Dr Wood asked will there be enough land, water and food as the world population reach’s 9 Billion by 2050 and where does the GSC fit in with this. Something to ponder for the group.

Overall another interesting and engaging day was held by the 2017 LGSC participants. We thank all guest speakers and the township of Koroit for hosting us for the day.
