Jodie Outtram has been employed in the Nursing field for over 27 years, specialising as a Drug and Alcohol Nurse (EN, Dip AOD, GradCert Ass & Cse Mgt , CertIV Train the Trainer)for the past 17 years.
During this time she has worked across the Great South Coast. Currently employed at South West Healthcare as a Drug and Alcohol Nurse.
Specializing in Assessment and Withdrawal as well as supporting and educating staff in Drug and Alcohol.
Jodie is also an active member of the Steering Committee for the Great South Coast Ice Challenge, she is passionate about her work and gets to meet and work with some interesting and amazing people everyday.
Andrew has had over 20 years’ experience in the human services field ranging from Child protection and family support to housing support and homelessness.
Andrew currently works as the Regional Homelessness Network Coordinator for Barwon and the Southern Western regions. The role resources front-line homelessness and family violence services across the region. Alongside the BSWHN role, Andrew has developed and teaches a Cert IV level Youth Homelessness elective delivered each year at Gordon TAFE as part of the Youth Work Certificate.
He currently sits on the board of Wombats Wish and Minerva Community services.
In 2012 as a result of witnessing the effects of family violence across the community, Andrew became a White Ribbon ambassador in order to promote ending violence towards women and to engage men in the community to become involved and be part of the solution.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Social Work form Monash University, A Graduate Diploma in Community Services and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. In 2014 Andrew received the Colac Mental Health week award for commitment to the community.
Chris is currently performing duties as Acting Detective Senior Sergeant – Incident & Response Manager for Western Region Division 2. In this role he manages & oversees all crime investigative response across the Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton regions.
During his career Chris has held numerous roles including; Sergeant, Detective and Unit Commander in various investigation units both in Melbourne and in Warrnambool.
Chris is married with four children, having moved to Warrnambool in 2011, for a “sea change”, since arriving from Melbourne as a genuine “City Slicker,” he has found the life in regional Victoria rewarding.
Chris has developed a passion for community policing and promoting the best possible policing service delivery to our community.
Michael has worked for the Victorian Government for 38 years. Beginning as an administrative officer for the Department of Labour and Industry, he studied a Bachelor Degree part-time before becoming a teacher in 1985. He commenced work at Camperdown High School (as it was named then), and worked in a further eleven schools in both the South West and eastern suburbs of Melbourne. During that time, he took on a variety of roles ranging from school production coordinator (15 musicals) to Year Level Coordinator, Leading Teacher, Assistant Principal and finally Principal of Warrnambool College.
He also completed a Graduate Diploma at Melbourne University and Master of Education (Leadership, Policy and Change) at Monash University. At the beginning of 2016, he was appointed Area Executive Director of the Wimmera South West bringing Executive leadership to the South West and Wimmera for the first time.
Mark has been working with South West Institute of TAFE since 2003 when he took on the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). In 2005, he was he was appointed to the position of Executive Manager – Corporate Services and served as the Institute’s Board Secretary. In November 2014, Mark was appointed as the Institute’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
As CEO, Mark is responsible for implementing the Institute’s strategic direction and ensuring efficiency across the Institute to meet the requirements of Government, enterprises, individuals, and the community. In his role, Mark is committed to improving the region’s educational attainment rates and reducing youth unemployment across the Great South Coast by attracting and retaining students in a supportive learning environment.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting), Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), a Diploma of Frontline Management, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
After completing his degree, Mark worked as an auditor in a second tier accounting firm followed by three years in television in a financial management role with Nickelodian and Paramount Comedy Channel in London, followed by a further 3 years in Melbourne with radio station Nova 100.
Damien Farley grew up in Warrnambool, attended Emmanuel College and completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Teaching at Melbourne University.
Damien’s teaching experience includes two years at Caulfield Park Community School, which gave him an understanding of, and a desire to teach, vulnerable and marginalised young people.
Over a two year period Damien taught at a number of London schools, from private schools where teachers wore full academic robes, to the low socio economic schools. On his return to Melbourne he spent four years at Buckley Park College in Essendon, which include teaching, program and year level coordination.
After resettling locally with his family in 2011 Damien taught at Warrnambool College for two years before taking on the School Coordinator role at the WAVE School in 2012.

Graeme returned to the Port of Portland in June 2016 to implement a series of procedural interventions aimed at improving berth throughput. This role has expanded into other projects addressing the future utilisation of the port given potential changes in mix and volume of commodities handled. Previously he was the CFO of the Port of Portland from early 2006 to mid 2008 and during the intervening period Graeme was CFO and Company Secretary of a mining company listed in Singapore but operating several mines in Indonesia and exploring for minerals in Cambodia.
Graeme is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He completed a B.Ec at Monash and an MBA at Deakin. After working at Elders Finance and Mayne Nickless in the 90’s, he joined P&O Ports and was Finance Manager at their logistics project at the Freeport Mine in West Papua, then Finance Director at their container terminal JV in Surabaya, Indonesia before spending 12 months on a management development program at P&O’s Fisherman Island Container Terminal in Brisbane.
Jim commenced at the Port of Portland in 2006 and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in October 2010. During his time at Port of Portland trade has grown with record volumes from 2011 each year to 2013. He has negotiated new infrastructure at the Port bringing new business including new facilities for mineral sands, plantation logs and wood chips.
Jim is a director of Ports Australia, a member of the Victorian Ministerial Freight Advisory Council, a member of the Victorian Grain Logistics Taskforce and Chairman of the Committee for Portland.
Prior to joining the Port of Portland, Jim was a corporate lawyer for 15 years working at General Counsel level for three ASX top 100 listed companies.
Jim holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) from Monash University.
Mark is an experienced executive and engineer capable of analysing and simplifying complex problems, delivering difficult projects and providing strategic clarity. He has worked at the Port of Portland since January 2010 in a senior port executive role, where he has responsibility for a total asset management system of infrastructure with a replacement value of over $500m and project delivery within a sensitive environment. Prior to working at the Port Mark worked in local government for over ten years where he held various positions in management, engineering design and project management. In these roles Mark had responsibility for delivery of numerous municipal projects with total value in excess of $40m, management of a commercial livestock saleyard and two regional Victorian airports (Portland and Hamilton).
Outside of work Mark and his wife Abby run a horse stud and beef cattle business. Mark holds a Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours and a Graduate Certificate of Literature.
As Smelter Manager Peter Chellis provides direction and co-ordination for the safe, efficient and cost effective operation of the Portland Smelter.
Peter is an experienced front line leader with a diverse industrial and mining industry background both in Australia and Overseas; he came to Portland Aluminium with over thirty years of mining and aluminium industry experience with Rio Tinto including a 25 year career at Comalco Aluminium.
Peter joined Portland Aluminium in 2005 as Potlining Area Supervisor. He has also spent time as Area Supervisor of Smelting Services, Human Resources Manager, Potroom Manager, Production Manager and has been in his current role of Smelter Manager since October 2012.
With a keen interest in organisational and individual development, Peter has been instrumental in the development of enterprise bargaining agreements, internal communication and employee recognition programs and developmental training for Portland Aluminium employees.
Peter is an executive on the Portland Aluminium founded Committee for Portland, and is held in high regard among his peers.
In addition Peter is involved in a number of community and industry initiatives, he has a passion for seeing educational opportunities provided to the younger generation and as such has been instrumental in partnering with community groups to develop and deliver programs to children and students aged from birth to 17 in the Glenelg Shire to enhance their learning abilities.
Lif is a catchment planner for the Great South Coast region for Wellways Australia. She looks after the focus and strategic development of clinical and community mental health services across five local government organisations. She has previously worked as a project manager over a 3 year long research project around mental health, metabolic factors and peer support.
Lif’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Health Science with a triple major in exercise science, physical activity and health and health promotion, in addition to this she also holds a Master of Public Health from Deakin University with a thesis in trauma informed practice, interventions and practice approaches in youth residential services.
Lynda Smith is a qualified health promotion practitioner with the South West Primary Care Partnership. Lynda has unique networking, capacity building, and project management skills. Currently supporting a variety of local government areas, health services and likeminded organisations to research, plan, advocate for, implement and evaluate population health promotion initiatives.
With over 10 years’ experience in preventative health Lynda is a veteran now supporting and mentoring services to instigate population health initiatives and projects across the Great South Coast. Priorities Lynda has focused on during her career include: physical activity, healthy eating, oral health and sexual health promotion. Lynda has a special interest in working with the Aboriginal, disability and early childhood sectors.
A former Children’s services educator, Lynda also holds an Associate Diploma of Social Science (Child Care); having over 15 years experience in the industry teaching, working in and managing children’s services including a domestic violence service. Lynda is a qualified vocational trainer and is currently completing a Certificate IV in Governance (non- for Profit).
Lynda volunteers as a board member for Kyeema Inc., a local disability service in Portland. Lynda is also a volunteer assessment officer for the Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health.
Married with four fantastic children, working in Warrnambool and Corangamite and residing in Portland Lynda is committed to health promotion in the Great South Coast

Dr Bernadette Northeast
Bernadette manages Volunteering Warrnambool, a volunteer centre that provides services to volunteers and volunteer involving groups in the Great South Coast region. She has a PhD in desert fish genetics but has not found a job description matching this area of expertise and uses her research skills to better understand and support the volunteer sector in Victoria.
Bernadette (GAICD) is involved as a volunteer with a number of organisations in the region. She is an SES volunteer, a Director of South West Healthcare, a Director and Trustee of the South West Community Foundation, Committee member of South West Sport and steering committee member of Leadership Great South Coast.
Sarah is the Manager Regional Economic Policy at Regional Development Victoria. She has extensive experience working across policy development, financial modelling, and project management. Sarah has previously worked at the Department of Treasury and Finance in the Budget and Financial Management Division. She also worked at Melbourne University providing business strategy and project-based advice and later established the Project Management Office. Sarah has a Bachelor of Engineering (Software – with Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University. She has also recently completed a Master of Economics at Amsterdam University, specialising in Behavioural Economics and Game Theory.
Dr. Greg Walsh
Champions of the Bush is chaired by Dr Greg Walsh, a regional economist who has spent the greater part of his professional life working with the food industry and the environmental and institutional factors that influence the production of food in regional economies, particularly in Australia.
He lives in the Warrnambool area, in the West Victorian region of Australia, where he is involved in the dairy, and livestock industries. This involvement has included wide-ranging consulting work in these industries and part-ownership of three large dairy farms in his home region. She is the co-lead for the Australian chapter of Techfugees , an international movement by the technology community to assist refugees to settle in new countries. Techfugees has resulted in several startups for the settlement sector in Australia.
Lynda is an intercultural practice expert appointed by the Council of Europe’s Intercultural Cities Programme and has created an intercultural regional settlement ecosystem plan for refugee settlement. She is the editor of the Intercultural Cities Australasia magazine and co-author of the Australian Intercultural Standards and Index and producer of the ‘How to work interculturally in your local government’ training video.
Craig is an experienced facilitator with a consistent track record of successfully helping leaders and their teams to sharpen the ‘dynamics’ or culture within the team and improve their performance as a result.
In particular, he helps teams to fundamentally improve the way the team interacts in order to build resilience, reduce frustration and stress, and ultimately improve productivity. He has a professional attitude and the ability to be flexible and handle all personality types in a positive manner.

As well as providing business coaching and mentoring, Kevin is also the Queensland Regional Director for the Best Practice Network. This network connects organisations to ‘Share and Find Better Ways’ through a number of visits and activities in member organisations.

Chief Executive Officer, Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West
EMILY LEE-ACK Emily Lee-Ack is the CEO of Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West and a long time advocate for women’s policy and women’s health. Emily grew up in the south west and returned to the region after working for EMILY’s List Australia for seven years, three as National Coordinator. Emily is the inaugural Chair of the Great South Coast Regional Partnership and Deputy Convenor of the Women’s Health Association of Victoria. Away from work, she enjoys running and gardening.
Kylie was born in Adelaide, South Australia she Graduated from University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media Studies and recently completed a three year Diploma in Local Government.
She was elected to Warrnambool City Council in 2012 and re-elected in 2016, was elected as Mayor of Warrnambool for 2015 – 2016, and again re-elected as Mayor of Warrnambool for 2016-2017. Kylie has various roles within the community including; Chairperson of Great South Coast Board, Deputy Chair – Regional Cities Victoria, Committee member for Business Professional Women South West, Member of the Corangamite Library Corporation Board
Cr Gaston’s background in the communications field and extensive experience in small business has served her well during her first term on Council, she is a strong advocate for furthering educational opportunities across the region.

Mike de Souza
Mike has held senior management roles with both Virgin and United Customer Management Solutions. Living overseas he was CEO of a French private equity group that successfully disrupted the hospitality, tourism, retail and logistics sectors in Europe.
He has been CEO of the Australian 3D Manufacturing Association since its inception, three years ago, and advises Government and business with regard to the impacts of this latest industrial revolution. Mike has sat on and advised many panels including the PMs Australian Competitiveness Agenda. He is also a member of the Apprenticeships Reform Advisory Group initially convened by the now minister for education, the Honourable Simon Birmingham.
Mike has gained a significant insight into the design and construction industry both through consultancy and directorships of entities in Australia and overseas.
Director of Corporate Services, Sustainability Victoria
Car Muller has spent the majority of the last five years leading the reform and improvement of government organisations. Currently the Director of Corporate Services at Sustainability Victoria (SV), was previously the Transformation Program Manager for the Environmental Protection Authority, Victoria (EPA).
A qualified Oceanographic Engineer, Carl spent 10 years at the UK Meteorological Office and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, working in various project and strategic based roles including the establishment of Australia’s Tsunami Warning System, Australia’s response to the 2004 Indonesian tsunami.
Graeme is an experienced science communicator and extension leader within Victoria’s Primary Industries sector. He leads a cross-industry team who work with farm and service provider audiences and have delivered over 700 sessions on climate and carbon issues to over 18,000 people in the last 3 years. These sessions are via request, demonstrating an approach that is meeting the needs of the farming community and packaging key climate information and research to meet the needs of rural audiences. Graeme can offer practical observations on approaches for better communicating climate and carbon issues in rural Australia.
He has a 20 year background in science and policy communication, farm planning, catchment management, forestry and agriculture industry development, land use change and socioeconomic impact programs. He managed the Victorian Plantations for Greenhouse carbon share-farming program in 2003-2006 which tested carbon sequestration ownership arrangements with Victorian farmers, learning much in the process.
He is currently DPI’s Climate Extension Specialist leading an innovative program that has created products such as the ClimateDogs, climate and carbon tools/newsletters (The Break, Milking the Weather), groundbreaking market research, capability development programs, webinar series and local “upscaling” sessions which assist farmers in making sense of emerging climate and carbon information and applying this to fit within their local farm systems and decision making.
He is passionate about assisting agriculture leaders and rural communities in making sense of the climate and carbon story, so they can make well informed decisions and get on with growing food and fibre while creating a vibrant future for agricultural communities.
Jason (2015 Alumni) previously worked with the Southern Grampians Shire Council as the Manager of Recreation. He is passionate about climate adaptation and how all of us as individuals can minimise the impact (our foot prints) on this world. Through the use of permaculture principles and embracing advancements and innovations in technology Jason is actively working toward living in a self-sustaining system.
Jason is currently managing the build of an 8 Star home for his family, with a view to a self sufficient lifestyle.
Mark Wootton with his wife, Eve own and manage Jigsaw Farms. Located north of Hamilton, Jigsaw Farms is a mixed operation of beef and wool with various combinations of biodiversity and agroforestry plantings which act as a carbon sink. They are building into their farming practices ways to lessen the impact of climate change. Mark is Chairperson of the Climate Institute and is a board member for the Victorian Ministerial Reference Council on Climate Change Adaptation. Mark is the former Chair of the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Authority.
Kevin is a qualified accountant who has worked most of his life in Local Government in senior finance and corporate service roles. His current role is Director of Community and Corporate Support at Moyne Shire following on from a long stint as Director of Corporate Services at Warrnambool City Council with both roles involving oversight of the myriad of services provided by local government and including regular meetings with the respective councils.
Kevin also sits on the board of Westvic Staffing Solutions and is a member of the Moyne Health Service Audit and Risk Committee with these roles improving his governance capabilities.
Outside of work he is a regular on the golf course and at the beach.

Dr Greg Wood
Dr Greg Wood is a Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute (FAMI), Certified Practising Marketer (CPM), Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AFAIM) and a Member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management.
He is a visiting Professor in the Business School of Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, United Kingdom and is also currently an honorary Professor of the Oslo School of Management in Norway.
As well as twenty years of academic experience, he spent from 1981-1990 working for a multinational energy and resources company and/or its affiliates. In his career, he has had a distinctive blend of commercial and academic experience.
Dr Wood has been extensively involved with the Warrnambool community having served or currently serving on a number of committees. He has also acted as an adviser to the Warrnambool Tourism Association, Premier Speedway, Warrnambool May Race Carnival; Warrnambool Entertainment Centre, and the Fun for Kids Festival.
In 1977, Jason Clarke achieved the lowest Year 12 score in the history of his school. Today he is one of the most sought after creative minds in the country, consulting on issues of leadership and innovation to some of Australia’s biggest companies and institutions. He’s developed and taught courses in Innovation, Logic and Problem Solving for two of Australia’s most prestigious Business Schools, the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship and the Stern Business School of New York. Damein Bell is a Gundtijmara man and CEO of Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation where, under instruction from the community, he implements Gunditj Mirring’s strategic plan, and advocates for Gunditjmara in native title and cultural heritage. Damein has been a board member of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, and is currently a board member of Native Title Services Victoria. He has studied at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Denis is a Gunditjmara person and lives in Portland. He has had a long involvement in Aboriginal land and cultural heritage management.
He is currently employed as a Project Manager for the Budj Bim Sustainable Development Partnership, which has as one of its main objectives the development of a World Heritage nomination for the Budj Bim lava flow. The Budj Bim lava flow has outstanding Aboriginal cultural heritage values including the world’s most ancient aquaculture sites.
Denis was the Chief Executive Officer with Winda Mara Aboriginal Corporation in Heywood from 2002 until 2010.
From 1995 until 2002 Denis was involved in the development of the Indigenous Protected Areas Program which assisted Aboriginal people throughout Australia to achieve greater control and management of their traditional lands.
Dedy is the Executive Officer at Warrnambool and District Foodshare, a community service not-for –profit organisation that provides food hampers for families in the community who are in crisis and need. Dedy was the recipient of the 2016 Local Achiever Awards. He is a former teacher, principal and football umpire.

Sally Obst , Risk & Emergency Management Officer, Wannon Water (2013 Alumni) – Originally making the move from Melbourne to Warrnambool in 1997 to undertake aquatic science studies at Deakin University Sally Obst has studied and worked in the region for the past 15 years. Sally has experience in both the scientific and dairy industries and is currently employed by Wannon Water. Sally has also been a volunteer with the Warrnambool SES for the past 10 years.
Greg is an educator, journalist and marketer with over twenty-five years of compliance, governance and risk management experience. He has run a boutique consultancy and been an AICD facilitator for twenty of those years, and over the journey he has worked with more than 10,000 company directors. His current directorships include St Martins Youth Arts Centre and North Melbourne Language and Learning, where he chairs the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. He also chairs the Audit Committee for Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman.
Greg is the former head of the ACCC Compliance Education Unit and served on the board of the Australasian Compliance Institute. His practice has a strong focus on marketing compliance, and his clients include a number of major national and international retailers.
Greg’s first love is theatre and his most important and useful course of studies was at the Nimrod Drama Studio. His personal motto is: “If it’s not about performance, please tell me what it’s about.”
Dr Daniel Terrill
Dr Daniel Terrill is an economic geographer who specialises in regional economic development in an Australian context. He has 15 years of micro economic consulting experience across many industries, including agribusiness, environment and natural resource management and urban and regional planning, with much of it in regional Victoria and regional Australia. As a partner in Deloitte Access Economics, he now leads teams of economists in these areas. He is a leading practitioner of regional economic modelling, including use of geographical information systems (GIS) as an analytical modelling tool.
Much of his recent work has focused on developing policies, strategies and project to improve Australian regions. He holds a Ph.D in agricultural and environmental economics from the University of Melbourne, and also holds urban and environmental planning qualifications. He comes from a farming background in north eastern Victoria, where he maintains an interest in a livestock farm.
Virginia Lovett took up the role of Melbourne Theatre Company Executive Director in January 2013. Prior to this she was General Manager of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival where she delivered a funding increase of $5 million and in 2011 achieved record attendance levels. A highly experienced and well-respected arts manager, she successfully designed a range of strategic and audience development initiatives through her roles at Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Festival.
In addition, Virginia has extensive marketing and communications experience gained in a range of different organisations including Zoos Victoria, Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Sydney Theatre Company. She worked as a media advisor for state ministers in Victoria and New South Wales.
In 2006 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. Until recently, Virginia was the Chair of Force Majeure. Currently, she is Chair of Arena Theatre Company and a member of the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia.

Lynne has trained many individuals to further develop and enhance their skills in public speaking and presenting. She has professionally assessed and coached in public speaking since 1997. She has delivered the nationally accredited module ‘Public Speaking’ through Victorian TAFEs and Universities.

Helga specialises in strategy and planning, stakeholder engagement and capacity building. Building on her extensive leadership roles in government, not-for-profit and membership organisations, Helga is a dynamic facilitator, a supportive and challenging coach, an effective trainer and an engaging speaker.
Helga is a Board member of the Royal Women’s Hospital and Social Housing Victoria and a former Director of YWCA Victoria and the Community Services and Health Industry Training Advisory Board. She wants to see more diversity and gender equality on boards and therefore developed a group coaching program to encourage women to get on, and stay on, Boards.
Initially trained and practising as a lawyer, her previous roles include Chief Executive Officer of Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project, Assistant Secretary of the Australian Services Union and Facilitator at Sustainability Victoria.

John was appointed a Victorian Magistrate on 15 December 2009. From 2010 to mid-2013, he was the supervising magistrate of the Assessment and Referral Court (ARC) List, a pilot “mental health” court program operating under the principles of therapeutic jurisprudence. The ARC List pilot was originally funded from 2009 to 30 June 2013, and is now recurrently funded because of positive evaluations of its success in reducing recidivism. The List commenced hearing cases on 21 April 2010.
Between 2014 and now, John has been sitting on rotation between Warrnambool and Geelong. In South-West Victoria, John sits in Warrnambool (3 days per week), Portland and Hamilton (both 1 day per week), and mainly hears and decides criminal cases. Prior to his appointment, John served as the President of the Mental Health Review Board of Victoria (MHRB) from September 2000 to December 2009. The MHRB was replaced by the Mental Health Tribunal in 2010. John holds qualifications in law, arts and education. Previously, he lectured at a TAFE College (1979-1989) and ran a part-time general legal practice (1980-1997). He also held a series of appointments to a variety of Victorian and Commonwealth tribunals from 1985 to 2000. In June 2006, John was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to observe and evaluate mental health tribunals, courts and systems in the United Kingdom, Europe and Canada. He completed his study tour in 2007.
Dr Nathalie Davis
Nathalie has worked in a broad spectrum of roles related to health and medical research, public health and health promotion. She is passionate about health equity, gender equity and accessibility for women.
After a PhD in Biomedical Research and working in a pharmaceutical company in Switzerland, she moved to Australia shifting her career to public health, health promotion and primary prevention programs. Nathalie has worked in a University department but has also experience in community development work. She is now the Great South Coast Team Leader at Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West (WHW BSW) based in Warrnambool. Previous to this role, Nathalie was the project coordinator for the workplace-based Take A Stand Against Domestic Violence: It’s Everyone’s Business program for WHW BSW.
Outside her role, Nathalie enjoys spending time with her family, riding her bike or hiking in the Grampians. Travelling is a big part of her interest, especially discovering Australia and the rest of the world, but also coming back to Europe visiting her parents.
Sarah returned to Warrnambool after time spent living in Perth for 2 ½ years, to study a Bachelor of Health Science at Deakin University in Warrnambool, majoring in Health Promotion, Nutrition and Physical Activity and Health. Throughout her degree she worked in nutrition and retail sales at Go Vita Health Shop, and spent some time working with the youth services team at Warrnambool City Council assisting with Youth Council centred projects. A strong health focussed customer service background has driven her passion for health and wellbeing, providing her with motivation to become involved in an organisation positively contributing to improving the lives of her local community. Addressing health inequalities experienced by women due to gendered drivers, and their contribution to the promotion of violence against women is an important and fundamental aspect of her role at Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West.
Outside of her work Sarah leads a very active lifestyle by the coast with her husband and friends, spending lots of time outdoors, entertaining and taking advantage of the built and natural environments on offer within the region.
Anita is actively involved in a number of community organisations and holds the position of Committee for Portland, Executive Officer. Anita was elected to Glenelg Shire Council in 2012.
Anita is involved in community development, sporting clubs (running, hockey and triathlon) and holds a Diploma in Education, Physical Education and Health; Certificate IV in Governance and Certificate IV in Workplace Training.

Steve Garner is the General Manager of Keppel Prince Engineering Portland, a major employer in theGlenelg Shire with over 400 employees. Steve has worked in the engineering industry for over 37 years taking on the General Manger role at Keppel Group in 1990. Since his appointment Steve has expanded the company’s operations to include sustainable energies (wind and solar). Keppel Prince Engineering is now considered a leader in the wind energy industry having completed numerous major projects. Steve has taken a proactive leadership role in promoting the wind energy industry and actively pursuing opportunities for Keppel Prince to lead in this field. Steve actively lobbies government to ensure growth of the industry to the benefit of the in the Great South Coast and Victoria.
Kara has a background in accounting, finance, and customer relationship management. Kara joined Port of Portland in 2011, initially as the Company Accountant and more recently in the role as Commercial Accountant. Kara was appointed to her current role, Business Development Manager, in May 2016. Prior to working at the port, Kara held various roles within government and commercial organisations. These positions included Executive Recruitment Consultant for the Hudson Highland Group, Business Analyst at Airservices Australia and European Tour Manager for The Travel Corporation.
Kara is CPA qualified and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Professional Accounting.
Alison is the Resource Manager at South West Fibre, a Bluegum wood chip mill and export company, based at Myamyn. Alison is relatively new to the region moving here three years ago from South Australia with her husband Ashley (Farm Manager) and four children. She is currently associated with Hamilton Olympic Swim Club committee and Glenelg Hockey Association. Alison is passionate about utilising the above organisations, employment and rural connections to help create greater ties and support networks between regional towns and groups within the Great South Coast.

Dr Stephen Ryan-Harvey BA BPPM (Hons) MBA DBA FGMAA
Stephen is Economic Development Coordinator for the Geelong region at Regional Development Victoria. He spent a number of years as an industry and economic policy adviser within the Victorian Government’s industry department. He has worked in the public and corporate sectors in both Australia and the United Kingdom.
Stephen is passionate about education and life-long learning and has a Doctorate of Business, a Master of Business Administration , and a Bachelor of Arts (politics and Policy Studies) from Deakin University and a Bachelor of Public Policy and Management (hons) from the University of Melbourne. His research interests include the use of social media by Indigenous-owned Australian businesses and networked models of governance in environmental management.
He is a fellow of the Graduate Management Association of Australia and a member of the Institute of Public Administration Australia.
Adele is a qualified and experienced manager with expertise in research, facilitation, project management, stakeholder and community engagement, strategic planning, and report writing. She has had extensive experience in local government having spent nine years from 2005 to 2014 as the Group Manager for Community and Culture with the Glenelg Shire Council, and the previous nine years as the Chief Executive Officer of the Glenelg Regional Library Corporation. She has a PhD in Management and a Master’s Degree in Education and has worked in South West Victoria for the past 20 years.
Sally Sudweeks is an experienced and passionate presenter and storyteller. With an extensive background in innovative education projects, addressing special needs and linking schools with their community, Sally has a practical look at communities, their values and individual resources and needs.

Roma Britnell MP – Member For South West Coast, was elected into Parliament following a by-election in October 2015. She worked for 30 years a registered Nurse working for 15 years in community health nursing and health promotion and before that she worked in acute nursing on hospital wards such as coronary care and intensive care.
Roma is also a farmer. Together with her husband Glenn they have bought into farming in the last 15 years and built a large dairy business milking 1000 cows.
She is the mother of 4 children ranging from 12 to 27 and recently became a grandmother.
Roma has been a leader in the Agricultural industry chairing many National, State and local boards and committees. She is passionate about her region and the people who volunteer so much of their time to make our home of South West Coast a great place to live.

Robert studied fine drawing at Glasgow University of Art, after which he joined the Scots Guards, British Army. Peter’s Project has been the main focus in Vicki’s life for the last 6 years. Working together with the incredible South West community, Vicki and the passionate Board of Peter’s Project, have worked tirelessly as a team, and have achieved a remarkable outcome – the South West Regional Cancer Centre – which is currently under construction in Warrnambool.

Tanja Kovac is a writer, lawyer and consultant for progressive causes. Beginning her career as a lawyer at Slater and Gordon, she acted in a number of high profile human rights cases, including as part of the legal team assisting Amnesty International in the MV Tampa case, regularly appearing in the media on behalf of her clients and the firm. In 2006 she was heavily involved in lobbying for the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities and in 2009, founded Human Rights are Aussie Rules, a National human rights education program teaching young people about Freedom, Respect, Equality and Dignity through sport. Tanja is currently Director of her own consultancy, Kovac & Co, while also Director and National Co-Convenor of EMILY’s List Australia, a financial, political and personal support network for pro-choice, progressive women candidates and MP’s.

Prof Snow Barlow
Professor Snow Barlow is a plant physiologist and agricultural scientist, whose research encompasses plant water use efficiency, viticulture and impacts of climate change and mitigation on agriculture, water management and global food security. He is Foundation Professor of Horticulture and Viticulture at the University of Melbourne.
Snow convenes the Primary Industries Research Adaptation Network of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF).
Currently he chairs the Expert Advisory Panel of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Filling the Research Gap and Action on the Ground RDE Programs in Climate Change and the Victorian Endowment for Science, Knowledge and Innovation (VESKI).He is a member of the Australian Landcare Council and the board of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation
Professor Barlow is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and in 2009 was awarded the ‘Australian Medal of Agricultural Science’.
Together with his partner Winsome McCaughey, he operates vineyards, grazing and farm forestry enterprises in the Strathbogie Ranges in North Eastern Victoria and markets fine wine under the Baddaginnie Run label.
Dan Tehan MP
Dan Tehan was elected as the Federal Member for Wannon at the 2010 federal election.
Dan lives in Hamilton on 20 acres. He believes that people in rural communities deserve a fair go and that the only way this is achieved is if people are prepared to stand up and fight for what they believe in. This belief was instilled in him as a boy growing up in rural Victoria with his three brothers and two sisters.
Graduating from Xavier College as Prefect and House Captain, Dan went to the University of Melbourne and completed a Bachelor of Arts, with honours, majoring in Political Science. He gained a Masters of International Relations from Kent University in England and has also completed a Masters of Foreign Affairs and Trade at Monash University.
Dan spent a year between high school and university working as a farm hand for the Wappan Pastoral Company and later spent a further two years as an International Agricultural Exchange Student living and working for Jacobson’s Beef Feedlot in Denmark.
Working for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Dan was a part of the US section policy unit. He went on to represent Australia’s interests as a foreign diplomat in Mexico in the Political and Economic section of the Australia Embassy. Dan was a senior adviser in the Howard Government to the Minister for Trade and spent two years as the Chief of Staff to the Minister for Small Business and Tourism.
Now more than ever, rural communities need a strong and effective voice advocating on their behalf. Dan Tehan is speaking up and demanding action is taken to ensure our elderly don’t have to leave their communities to access aged care, that young families have access to the medical services they need locally and that local Wannon business owners and farmers aren’t regulated out of existence.
Dan is fighting to ensure Federal road and rail funding reaches country as well as urban areas and he is fighting for local tertiary students to be offered affordable choices when deciding where they would like to pursue their studies. He cares deeply about rural Australia and strongly believes that rural communities remain the life-blood of our nation.
Bruce Anson is CEO of the Warrnambool City Council. With an extensive career in local government spanning 40 years Bruce has held senior management roles for the past 33 years.
Bruce is Chairman, Barwon South West Regional Development Australia (RDA) Committee and a member of Regional Management Forum Barwon South West.
Bruce also holds a Director position on the Great South Coast Group, an alliance of government, industry and community, working collectively for the benefit of our region
Bruce is a member of Deakin University Leadership Group, Fellow of Local Government Professionals, South West Sustainability Partnership, Local Government Chief Officers Group, Australian Institute of Company Directors, Deakin University Medical School – Greater Green Triangle Clinical School Community Advisory Board and the Regional Policy Advisory Committee.
Sharon is CFA’s Community Education Coordinator in the South West region since 2009, commencing in this role 3 weeks prior to the Black Saturday fires. She leads an extensive team of facilitators and presenters of both bushfire and residential fire safety education programs and community engagement.
A volunteer firefighter for 28 years, Sharon commenced her CFA career at the Western District Training Ground in Penshurst, as a casual PAD (Practical Area Drill) Operator in 1994. For 10 years from 1998, she coordinated training at the ground for firefighters and commercial emergency response teams, as well as casually presenting fire safety to community groups.
During a broad range of emergencies, Sharon leads the section within Incident Control Centres responsible for informing and warning communities, and includes building strong relationships with key stakeholders such as the media, government authorities and councils, local businesses, and diverse populations . Recently she was accredited as a Public Information Officer Level 3 through AFAC (Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council).
Sharon is also a partner of a sheep farming business with her husband Anthony, at Caramut, since 1987, and is a member of the LGSC Alumni 2013.
Dr Jason Fox
Dr Jason Fox is a motivation strategy and design expert who shows forward thinking leaders how to influence work culture, drive progress and build for the future of work.
A big part of Jason’s work involves unpacking the latest trends and developments in work culture and gamification – removing the hype and adding the science to make work work.

Australian Red Cross water and sanitation specialist, aid worker, Australian Red Cross Ambassador
Bob Handby has worked in conflict and disaster zones all over the world. His first mission with Red Cross was to Uganda in 1984, helping provide clean water and sanitation to those displaced in the country’s civil war. Since then he has worked, among other places, in Iraq after the Gulf War assisting Kurdish communities, as well in Serbia during the Kosovo conflict. Trekking on foot to remote regions and hitching tractor rides up mountains, Bob has helped thousands of people to rebuild and recover after floods, cyclones and tsunamis. With expertise in water, sanitation, shelter, health and hygiene issues, he also trains other aid workers headed to disaster and emergency zones. During his time with the Red Cross Bob has also had 27 year career in LocaI Government as an Environmental Health Officer. Bob supports the everyday work of Red Cross, particularly their international work providing clean water and sanitation to vulnerable communities.
Natalee is the Deputy Editor The Weekly Times, Editor The Weekly Times FARM magazine. Natalee leads a team of 30 journalists plus many other associated team members in the country’s biggest rural newspaper and media organisation, and edit a magazine dedicated to progressive, niche food production. Justine is a co-founder and Director of Brand & People Thankyou Group. Thankyou Group is a social enterprise that exists for the sole purpose of funding projects in developing nations. Renowned for its world- first campaigns, energetic staff culture and innovative marketing strategies and implementation. During the five years of the organisation’s journey, Justine has played a lead role in the vision and rebranding of the company from Thankyou Water to Thankyou, the development of two new product ranges and the implementation of a successful marketing campaign that resulted in major retail deals with Coles and Woolworths.
Chief Operations Officer, Oaktree
Minto has been with Oaktree since 2011, leading the People and Culture strategy before stepping into the role of COO in 2013. Jason Mifsud has been leading cultural transformation across numerous sectors for over 20 years, delivering significant organisational change and development in Aboriginal and Multicultural Affairs.
On his mother side, he is a member of the Kirrae and Peek Whurrong peoples’ of the Gunditjmara nation in southwest Victoria and his father migrated from Malta, providing him with a rich sense of cultural pride, authority and integrity.
Jason has a unique and broad skill set in business, community and sport, holding senior management and executive roles as well coaching experience at AFL level with the St Kilda and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs.
He has extensive experience in community, government and corporate relations and over 10 years’ experience in leading, designing and delivering cultural auditing, strategy and training through his own private business.
Jason has held representative roles on the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation’s Suicide Prevention Taskforce and the Victorian Government – Ministerial Advisory Council for Indigenous Affairs and Economic development.
He currently sits on the Board for the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre and the national reference group Recognise, supporting constitutional recognition and change. He has also previously sat on the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.
In 2010 Jason was recognized as one of Australia’s top ten emerging leaders, winning the sport category, is an alumni of the of Harvard Business School – Strategic Management & Business program, addressed the United Nations on Indigenous Affairs.
He is currently the Head of Diversity at the Australian Football League with responsibly to drive the strategic direction for the Indigenous and Multicultural portfolios.
Mark Brennan is currently the Executive Officer at South West Primary Care Partnership. In this role Mark works with a dynamic group of over 30 member agencies and over 10 partnership networks in the GSC region empowering communities to improve their health and wellbeing, using integrated approaches to prevent, coordinate and manage complex social problems and chronic illness.
Previously Mark was Programs Manager, Health and Wellbeing Pillar, Barwon Primary Care Partnership. Mark coordinated an integrated partnership of 15 member agencies addressing the determinants of mental health and well-being which included working groups of member agencies on; Freedom from Violence against Women, Freedom from Discrimination, Physical Activity and Social Connectedness
Marks professional background has included working on the Australian Early Years Development Index coordination across 19 primary schools, Physical Activity and Nutrition (Community Garden Development) and Smoking Cessation, a community approach in partnership with Neighborhood Renewal.
Mark was the Active Eat Well and Romp and Chomp Coordinator of whole of Community Obesity Prevention Initiatives. Two of four projects worldwide to show a significant difference in the weight status of over a 1000 children compared to a control group of a 1000 children across the Barwon South West region.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Science, Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics and is a Graduate of Australian Company Directors.
Cr Chris O’Connor
Cr O’Connor represents the Central Ward of the Corangamite Shire and was first elected Mayor in November 2012. He is currently serving his second term in this position.
Chris is the Chair of the Great South Coast Group, an alliance of government, industry and community, all working collectively for the benefit of our region.
Chris and his wife Jeanette have five children and they are the main focus of their lives. He has been a dairy farmer as well as owning and developing property off the farm.
Outside Council, Chris is interested in all sports his children are involved in particularly football and netball. He also races and breeds horses and in any spare time he has in his busy life, he enjoys travelling.
Cr. Ruth Gstrein
Councillor Ruth Gstrein was elected to Corangamite Shire Council in March 2002, Mayor in November 2006 and re-elected Mayor in November 2007 and December 2008. She stepped down as Mayor in December 2009.
Cr Gstrein represents the Central Ward and is a member of Council’s Audit Committee, the Lake Bullen Merri and Gnotuk Advisory Committee, Corangamite Regional Library Service, Municipal Association of Victoria and Arts & Culture Advisory Committee.
Cr. Gstrein is also a member of the Regional Development Australia (RDA) Board for Barwon South West.
Adam Elliot is one of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers. He beat Disney, Pixar and Fox Studios to win the Academy Award for his short film Harvie Krumpet in 2004. He’s also a former Young Achiever of the Year for Victoria and has been recognised as an Australian National Treasure. His first full-length film, Mary and Max, was the opening night film at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. It was the first time an animated film ever received such an honour.
Adam’s story is one of patience, persistence and hard work. He was able to overcome all obstacles – exhaustion, rejection, lack of finance, low expectations – to achieve his dreams. Along the way, he learnt to lead a team of 120 artists and ensure that both the vision and responsibility was shared. The result was a remarkable, funny, inspiring and engaging film about two unlikely pen pals.
Adam is without a doubt one of Australia’s finest filmmakers.

Mary has 34 years post graduate experience across a broad range of executive management areas within the health industry and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
In the 1980’s she was the head of the Cytopathology Department at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, holder of international qualifications in Cytopathology, the inaugural Chief Examiner for Cytopathology for the Royal Australian College of Pathologists and the CEO of the Australian Society of Cytologists.
Since 1991 she has held research management roles in a variety of listed and unlisted biotechnology human and animal health companies and also been involved in a broad range of general executive management in the areas of international collaborations, contract prosecution, Business Development, Regulatory compliance, Project Management, Product Commercialisation, Finance, General Management, QualitySystems, Risk Management, ISO 9000, HR, Records Management and OH&S.
Up until September 2012, Mary was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of research and Director of the Office for Cancer Research, at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre here in Melbourne. Peter Mac is the only public hospital in Australia dedicated to a single disease – Cancer.
As the COO of the largest Cancer Research Institute in Australia she managed an annual operating budget of $50million, a workforce of 430, across 6 scientific themes of cancer research, with supporting platform technologies such as microscopy, Genomic analysis and bioinformatics etc
Mary was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Gardiner Foundation in September 2012.

Greg’s extensive work history includes appointments to Boards and Audit Committees, balanced with well-honed commercial skills. He has held directorships with the Shell Company of Australia, Gogas, Shell Services, Shell Fiji, Shell New Caledonia, Shell Tahiti, Shell PNG, Trustee Shell Super Fund, Australian Tax Office and the NSW Police Force.
Greg has previously been employed as the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Human Resources, Procurement, Property Operations and Fleet for the Australian Tax Office. He spent the previous 18 years working with Shell Australia where he held various senior management and board positions. Greg holds three Masters degrees, in accounting, in business (corporate law) and in professional ethics, as well as a Graduate Diploma in taxation. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants.
